A Quick Solution to Low Milk Production in Uganda.

Milk production in Uganda has remained below potential due to poor feeding practices, low-quality breeds, and limited veterinary services. Many farmers still rely on indigenous cows with low milk yields and graze them on poor pastures. Without proper nutrition and healthcare, milk output remains low, affecting both household income and national supply.

A quick and effective solution lies in adopting improved dairy breeds like Friesians or crossbreeds, which produce more milk when well managed. Alongside breed improvement, feeding high-quality forage like Napier grass, silage, and dairy meal supplements can significantly boost production. Access to clean water and routine veterinary care is equally essential to maintain cow health and maximize yields.

Government and private stakeholders should work together to support smallholder farmers through training, access to affordable breeding stock, and subsidized feed. By combining improved genetics, better feeding, and proper animal care, Uganda can quickly transform its dairy sector and reduce milk shortages nationwide.
