As urban populations grow, the need for local and sustainable food sources is becoming urgent. Bringing food production back to cities through urban farming is a smart solution that reduces transport costs, promotes food security, and creates jobs. Rooftop gardens, backyard farming, and container gardening are transforming unused spaces into productive farms.
In Uganda and across Africa, city dwellers are increasingly growing vegetables, herbs, and even raising poultry in small spaces. With limited land, urban farmers are using innovative methods like vertical farming, hydroponics, and sack gardens to maximize yields. These practices not only provide fresh food but also promote environmental awareness.
To support this movement, local governments and communities should invest in training, tools, and policies that encourage urban agriculture. When cities produce some of their own food, they become more resilient, self-reliant, and healthier places to live.
